Meet the HIE team

Human Impact Engineering employs a multidisciplinary research and design team with a broad range of skills, capabilities and experience.

Tom Gibson BE MSc GMQ PhD CPEng | Director

Tom Gibson is the Principal Engineer and founding Managing Director of Human Impact Engineering (HIE). Tom’s international reputation, based on his research outcomes, publications and practical solutions, is the result of thirty years experience in industry, academia and consulting. Tom’s qualifications in automotive crash injury causation include a Masters degree in Automotive Engineering from Cranfield University in the UK and a PhD focused on whiplash associated disorders from the University of NSW, Australia. After working for many years as Vice President of Biokinetics & Associates, Canada’s foremost authority on the assessment of impact injury, Tom returned to Australia in 1996 to establish Human Impact Engineering. HIE focuses on the area of impact injury prevention, motor vehicle crash investigation, and the design and testing of protective systems. Tom has recently become a Visiting Professor at the University of Technology Sydney.

Amy Clarke BE Med | Project Engineer

Amy Clarke specialises in impact injury biomechanics and accident investigation and reconstruction. Her projects have included comprehensive reviews and analyses of injuries and injury causation in the areas of vehicle and transport safety, sporting activities, occupational hazards and forensics. Some of her recent work has involved assessing safety equipment fitted to vehicles, analysis and testing of harness racing equipment, analysing a database of motor sport accidents, analysis of safety cage structures for racing vehicles, and the design and testing of new restraint systems. Amy has a Bachelors degree in Biomedical Engineering and is currently undertaking a PhD on designing a test methodology for mouthguard effectiveness with the Queensland University of Technology. Amy is also a recently trained ANCAP assessor.

Dasun Abey BE Mech (Biom) | Project Engineer

Dasun Abey recently graduated from Biomedical Engineering at the University of Sydney. Dasun completed an internship at Westmead Dental Hospital where he took part in two research projects examining the biomechanical role of the temporomandibular ligaments in a range of injury and impact loading scenarios. He developed several computer based simulations of jaw mechanics using data gathered from clinical trials conducted upon patients at the institute. His final year thesis project was in developing a low cost prosthetic knee for amputees residing in developing nations.

Tom Whyte BE Mech (Biom)/BCom | Project Engineer

Tom Whyte is one of our newest engineers and holds a combined Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering (Biomedical) and Commerce from the University of Sydney. Tom recently completed an internship at Sydney Orthopaedic Research Institute acquiring and developing skills in Finite Element Analysis, 3D modelling and injury biomechanics. In conjunction with the Research Institute Tom completed his honours thesis titled "A model for investigating the medial knee joint contact force during gait following high tibial osteotomy".

Anne Forster BA DipEd MEd MIAMA | Director of Training and Education Services

Anne Forster is an independent consultant and is Director of Forster & Gibson Pty Ltd, a private company specializing in the design and development of e-learning and the strategic development of entrepreneurial ventures in education and training. Anne is a highly regarded expert in the design of innovative learning using current technologies to suit the needs of non traditional students. She was named in the 2011 World List of the Top Ten Movers and Shakers in Corporate eLearning. Anne is an Associate Professor and adjunct member of faculty with the University of Maryland University College, teaching courses in Business and Systems Thinking for the online Master of Distance Education and eLearning. She also holds an adjunct Associate Professor role with the University of New England in Australia. Anne manages staff development for HIE and co-ordinates the development of training and education programs for HIE's clients.

Dejan Ninic BE Mech PhD  | Associate Engineer

Dejan Ninic graduated from Mechanical Engineering at the University of New South in 2000. He obtained his PhD in the area of Multiaxial Fatigue in 2006. His academic specialities are static and dynamic structural analysis, finite element analysis and numerical simulation. Having previously been a HIE team member, Dejan recently returned from a four year trip in Europe where he was a consultant to racing teams in the World Rally Championship, the European Rally Championship and various national championships in France, Italy and the Canary Islands. His passion for motorsport has helped him obtain a strong understanding of vehicle dynamics, racing car construction, race and rally team management and learn French and Italian. At HIE he plays a role in test rig design and operation, roll cage analysis and general structural analysis.

Kim Thai BE Mtrn (M Biom E) | Associate Engineer

Kim Thai specialises in impact injury biomechanics. Kim holds a Bachelors degree in Mechatronics Engineering and Masters in Biomedical Engineering from the University of New South Wales and is currently conducting a PhD research study on pedal and motorcycle helmet performance with the UNSW School of Risk and Safety Sciences.

 

 


 

Liang Tang BE Mech (M Biom E M Com) | Associate Engineer

Liang Tang has a Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering (specialising in Biomedical Engineering) from the University of Sydney and a Masters of Commerce from UNSW. Liang has a keen interest in injury biomechanics, which is nurtured through his research and development work at HIE.

 

 


 

Jacqueline Lee Engineering Intern

Jacqueline Lee is currently in her final year studying Mechanical Engineering at the University of New South Wales. She has joined us as an intern and assists in projects and laboratory testing.
